Now Playing: "Denial" -- Cool For August -- Grand World

Question about the lyrics

As I changed my lyric, I wondered if perhaps people would like me to post the song/artist as well, or if when I change it, people would like a post recapping the lyric and stating what song/artist it was from. If you have an opinion, let me know.

Working out is like getting a job

Getting a job is a funny thing. You can't get a job with out experience, you can't get experience with out having a job. When you exercise you're supposed to feel better, have more energy and ultimately more time because you aren't tired all of the time. However, I'm too tired and lack the energy and time to work out.

Savings my ass

Just wanted to let everyone know that this daylight savings time thing is seriously messing me up.

It's Paul Day!!!!

Holy crap I'm full. I decided that I'd make something different for breakfast, so I did. It's funny that when you are making a little of this and that, it doesn't seem like so much food, but once you put the bacon and hashbrowns and the eggs together, you suddenly have enough to feed the greater metropolitan area. It's now 9.30, which means it's time for Gilmore girls with intermitant studying during commercials. Afterwards I plan on transitioning to campus to complete the cramming process. Then it's off to the most boring class on Earth and then to Des Moines to see Sir Paul McCartney this evening. I hope this day finds all of you in good health.

P.S. Today's Lyric of choice is a minute tribute to tonight's activities

Nearing the Last Chapter

I am a professional student, it's pretty much what I do. I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm good at, but I don't feel that's required to be a professional. Most of the players for the Houston Texans are considered "Professional" athletes, but judging by their required (0-6), I'm not so sure that any of them are particularly good at it.

I've recently scheduled for classes for the second semester of my sixth (and final) year here at the wonderful Iowa State. It's an impressively weird feeling. This is a place where I have now spent a quarter of life. Until I came here, I lived with my parents and this was the turning point of adulthood. A time where I responsible for myself and my actions. I never planned on being here until arthritis set in, but plans change and the times were good. It occurs to me every time I walk to or from a class that this is my last fall here. Next year at this time, I'll be somewhere different. Somewhere without so many trees changing colors. Somewhere without 24,000 people roaming across campus and lounging in the grass, trying to get some studying in or a quick nap. It's kind of sad. I should probably start taking some pictures, so that when I go senile I'll have something look at and remember my adulthood.

I'm still here and I'm starting to miss it already. I'm actually missing the dorms. It's funny, when you're in the dorms all you can think about is how it'd be nice to get an apartment and have more space, your own room, a kitchen. But then you get out and you have all of these things and you realize that in a way, it was the lack of all those things that made it the most fun. It was having thousands people around to share a great play with. It was running through the halls and down a stairwell to jump up and down with friends with the swish of a made basket. It was the room with computers whirling, tvs flashing, stereos blasting and lights glowing. It was the 4.30 dinner and 10 o'clock second dinner. It was the sleeping til noon because you'd been up until 4 the night before playing some CS. (But hotdamn, the first place rankings were worth it) It was the warm/ inviting feeling of our little space. It was looking at the clock that said 12:04 and realizing that the night was still young and plowing on. It was the all-nighter to finish art projects. It was getting into bed, and then getting out of bed to go move my car. Good thing someone was never fast to sleep and always ready for a cig. It made those little treks up the block in the sub-zero temperatures much more enjoyable. It was someone dropping cheese all over the floor. It was someone nuking the shit out of everything because it might be a little too old and may be a good candidate for curing a bacterial infection, but so long as it's microwaved for the better part of an hour, it'll be ok. It was the destruction of one keyboard because even though in the Mountain Dew commercials the cans fly straight without rotating or spinning, they don't really do that in real life. It was too much tequila and slamming the door in the RA's face because the ground was slippery from all of the aforementioned tequila. It was trying to find the mic. It was cleaning up puke at 3 in the morning and being so awake that the roomie and I stayed up playing football and eating chips and salsa. (An odd choice given the resemblance to puke). It was being able to stay inside on a blizzard and still being able see friends, have 3 meals, play golf down the hallways and play a whole lot of games. It was the cart wheels in the hallway. It was trying to touch the ceiling with the top of your head after a concert. It was eating 5 pounds of animal crackers, or at least watching someone do it. It was sleeping with the window open in the middle of winter because the heat wouldn't turn off. It was also subsequently watching the roomie sit at his computer, somewhat close to the window, try and type as he was wrapped in 3 blankets and a parka. I think the mittens probably made typing somewhat difficult, but he seemed to manage. It was the phone ringing at 9 in the morning and having to somehow get from 6 feet in the air to the ground and across the room. Many injuries occurred do to that damned phone. It was endless hours of Eddie Izzard. It was my first drink. It was a couple people's first drinks. It was the 11 o'clock rearranging that didn't end until 5 in the morning. It was the people, the friends. It was chapters 1, 2 and 3. It was a lifetime ago, and I want to go back.

Busy week

So you may have noticed that there hasn't been a great deal of updating this week, and I can pretty well assure you that there won't be much more for the remainder of the week. This is an insanely busy/stressful week for papers and tests and work on top of it, so there really isn't much time for me to post regularly. I hope to resume fairly regular posts next week.

Ripped From the Headlines! (ESPN.com to be exact)

22. Iowa State (19-12)
Iowa State Summer update: Not getting heralded recruit Theo Davis eligible was a hit. The Cyclones were counting on Davis to be a potential starter in the post. The rest of the squad kept a low profile this summer but word has it they were in the gym cranking on their games and ensuring that the Cyclones are a legit Top 25 team (good sell, right?).

Identity:
The Cyclones' staff says this will be a pressing and trapping team. Coach Wayne Morgan wants to continue to open up the offense. When Jake Sullivan was playing, there were a lot of set plays, but since Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock took over, the emphasis has been on more freelancing.

Go-to guy:
Stinson. He's as talented a lead guard as any team has in the country. He has the toughness and moxie that will keep the Cyclones in any game. He's not one-dimensional. He can get after it defensively. Expect this squad to funnel through Stinson.

Glue guy:
The coaches can't say enough about forwards Shawn Taggart and Rahshon Clark. These two, along with guard Tasheed Carr, are the unsung players on the squad. If Iowa State is going to make a top-four run in the Big 12, players like this trio will be difference makers. The sleeper in the bunch is Czech center Jiri Hubalek, who has been the biggest surprise in the preseason with his ability to come in and help right away.

Our concern:
As much as we're singing the praises of these frontcourt players, they still need to go out and prove it on the court. This squad will be judged by how much the frontcourt produces and defends on a nightly basis.

Schedule matters:
Iowa State should be able to enter the Big 12 with a nifty record. The Cyclones host Northern Iowa in a grudge game as well as Iowa. Playing Ohio State in Des Moines should be a win while the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii isn't too stiff. The toughest game could be in the second round against Oregon State before a possible matchup with host Hawaii in the final.

Fran Fraschilla's take:
Any team that returns a backcourt of Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock can do damage in the NCAA Tournament. The juniors don't get nearly the respect nationally that they should, but they combine for 30 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in more than 35 minutes a game apiece. Stinson, "Mr. Blue Collar," returns after finishing in the Big 12's top 20 in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and field goal percentage.

Sophomores Tasheed Carr and Rashon Clark are ready to step up and provide more support on the perimeter for the Cyclones. The key to any kind of NCAA run in March, however, will be finding a replacement for the departed Jared Homan inside. The most likely candidate is 6-10 freshman Shawn Taggert.

The New Bond

So today's 'intersting news' link on the right is from the BBC and mentions the most likely choice for the next 'Bond' that will be unveiled tomorrow. Their choice is Daniel Craig. I'm not sure how I feel about his choice. Obviously Connery was the best Bond by far. But I also enjoyed Roger Moore and even Pierce Brosnan as of late. I'm just not overly sure if I see this guy as fitting at the 'Bond' mould. Daniel Craig was most recently in a movie called Layer Cake, and also starred in Tomb Raider.

Premium Quality at Affordable Prices

I have a new favorite drinky during classes. I love me some Starbucks™ Carmel Frappuccino. Perhaps it's because it's a lowfat creamy blend of Starbucks™ coffee and milk. Or could it simply be it's because it's so darn tasty?

Dear Elephant,

I'm not sure who you are or what you do, and you should know that I respect you as a person. You may be 20 or 80, male or female, black or white, truth is I don't really care. You see my friend, people like you should not be allowed to live on the third floor. This may come as a giant surprise, but people live below you. In essence, your floor is my ceiling. Now when you do whatever in the hell it is that you do, it shakes my walls, not to mention the pictures placed nicely on them. Aside from this, it is impressively annoying to hear nothing but thumping all my live long day. So please take this to heart when I say that I hope you lose all of your limbs and are reduced to laying in a single location for the duration of your stay here. If you'd like, you can borrow my sword to expedite the process.

Best of Wishes,
Your Downstairs Neighbor

Hello Monday

So here we are, another Monday. I have a test in about 3 hours, I've been studying for awhile, but hot damn, I really don't like studying and I needed a break. I've found another show to watch in the morning. Scifi Channel plays Roswell at 8 in the morning, it's a fairly interesting show, kinda catchy. Of course they have back to back episodes which means it runs into my Gilmore Girls time. And why they need to start Gilmore Girls at 9.30 is beyond me. It then runs until 10.30 so when I switch to West Wing, it's already half over. Most of them I've seen so it's not a big deal and then I catch a complete episode at 11. It's hard being a college student, I know.

Actually, it's getting a little annoying. I'm tired of tests and projects and all the crap that goes with classes. I like the classes themselves, well the ones not involving consumer research, that one makes me want to run smack dab into a wall of needles rather than going to class. Thankfully I don't have that class today, I do however have a test, followed by advertising and then a two hour meeting with my marketing & promotion group to work on our huge product report. Grrrr.

On the happy side of things, I have tonight and tomorrow night off. My legs and schoolwork are very thankful.

Sniffles

Welcome to Thursday. I'm sick. Not on my death bed or anything of the sort, just sick with a cold thingy. It's still no fun. I didn't feel very well last night and I've since slept an impressive amount. It helped to some degree. A sweatshirt and comfy lounge wear have been my predominant modes of keeping warm today, along with the disappointing flipping of the furnace switch. I also trekked out to K-mart where I provided a birth certificate, blood work, fingerprinting and a urine sample so I could purchase some sudafed. Hoorah for Sudafed. I have to work tonight, I don't really want to, but I'm going to have to pay the aforementioned heating bill. I'd much rather lay on a couch, drink some hot chocolate and watch tv with my honey bunny.

The Series

I'd have to say that my NL Matchup would be the Braves and the Cards. AL Matchup would be the Red Sox and the Yankees. In the Series, the Braves and Red Sox. (I really can't stand the Yankees and beinga Cubs fan I feel that I am almost predispositioned to want the Red Sox to win given there fairly lengthy drought and only recent success) I'm going to have to go with the Braves winning it all. Partly due to the minor fact that it's my girlfriend's favorite team, partly because I want an NL team to win and Partly because I don't want people to say the Cardinals are world champions. I don't care if that means the Cubs are in the best division, I can't bring myself to rejoice a cards victory.

NL MVP - I would like to see D-Lee get it, but I feel it's going to come down to Jones and Pujols and that being the case, GO JONES!

AL MVP - Big Papi. I don't really care that he doesn't play defense, that's what gold gloves are for. He's certainly helped the Red Sox win a significant number of games. Not to say that A-Rod hasn't, but for the amount of money he's making and the 200 million to pay the rest of that team, I'd hope they could win a few games...

I Do You Should Too - JFK

Here's another installment of my nationally acclaimed "I Do You Should Too" posts. Today's item of interest is actually the entire works of a local band (well, not local to me, but local if you live in Ohio) named July for Kings.

July For Kings is an amazing rock band from Ohio who've been together since 2002. They've released two cds to date, their Debut album "Swim" and there most recent delivery "Nostalgia." Both cds are truly amazing. They're good old fashioned rock cds. Not hard rock by any means, but the kind of rock that is good during a night drive in the cool autumn air, or a nice night on the couch. The lyrics are catchy and I can almost guarantee that after a few short listens, you'll be singing along too. If you like bands like Dishwalla, Vonray, Radford, Pay the Girl, or Course of Nature, I'd strongly suggest you check these guys out. If you click on the link on the right side of the page, it will take you directly to the music portion of their website where you can preview songs and even listen to complete versions of two songs from their most recent release. I would urge you to give "One by One" a listening as it's certainly one of my favorites, and one that even makes you ponder your environment. What are you waiting for? Check 'em out!

    Yet another...

In a long line of shows that I strangely enjoy. Perhaps I should just give up TV, it seems to do more harm than good. Especially if you look at the impressive list of shows yet to be watched that are piling up on the TiVo. Thankfully I have mornings free to watch some ABC Family, that way I can catch up on my Gilmore Girls. (on a saving grace, Sebastian Bach is occasionally on the show)
