My final for my class on creativity involves writing a paper that addresses one fairly straight-forward but difficult question...

"How can the United States recapture its creativity and innovation leadership in the world?"

We are allowed to brain storm with others and try and get a range of ideas and opinions to write on, so I'm looking for you help. If you read this blog, or just this post, please feel free to consider the question and leave a comment with your view. Your solution can be as broad or narrow as you'd like. If you want to address it from a political standpoint, feel free. If you think it has to do with the way people are brought up, or perhaps schooling, feel free to say. I'm looking for any idea or thought you have on the subject. So read this post, ponder the question and feel free to leave a response. Then stop back in the next few days for what will hopefully be some more interesting/intriguing or at least humorous posts...

OK....honestly, my first thoughts were "pancakes" and "peanut butter". They were seperate thoughts, though, not together. But then I thought "wait, what if they WERE together." Peanut butter ON pancakes...... Creative.... Innovative.... As far as I know it is on both accounts. I wonder if it would actually be good?

PS - I will try to provide a more serious thought/opinion on the subject in the near future.

I'm fairly certain that a lot of people actually put peanut butter on pancakes, and it might even be a menu choice at iHop...

I've never seen or heard of it before. It figures though. People try everything it seems.

OK, here is a serious answer for you....

One reason the USA's status in the creativity and innovation leadership may have be slipping is related to the overall slip in education in the country. I'm sure we've all heard various reports of how other countries' youngsters are better educated by the time they reach college age than the current US youth are. A basic solution may than be rehabilitating the education system. I'm not offering solutions on how THAT may be accomplished in this blurb, however.

I think for students that getting the basics down, the reading, writing, and arithmetic, (and leading the world in those areas) will be the key. Those basics provide a good foundation for all other subjects and learning them well will teach the brain how to learn and create and innovate effectively. The overall education should be as well-rounded as possible, while keeping those basics at the core. I guess it's kind of just trying to get people to use their brain power to the fullest potential. Which would lead to creativity and innovation.
